AMT RBOP Lit

Post by mophius » Wed Dec 12, 2018 10:15 pm

A brave undertaking.
I am attempting to do a lit version of the classic Bird of Prey in sacred scale. It may have been done before but this will be my try.
When I did the 1600 kit I made all sorts of silly mistakes with glueing, painting, sanding and the decals. This time I will accept nothing but perfection from myself.

My first task was to cut off the tip of the nacelles and hollow out for a 3mm LED. Next was wiring some LEDs, I had to be wary as I had cut down the electrodes to about 8mm. I didn't want to burn out the internals of the LEDs. I had to grind down the lip of the LEDs to insert them into the nacelles backward after threading the wires through.
Next up was the main Hull and wings. First I took all the locator pins off the insides. Secondly I ground down a channel in the wings so that my 30awg wires can be hidden with some putty. This is where I nearly went through the wings and main body with my dremmel as I don't want to use a strip of plasticard to cover them.

This is the state of play right now and maybe until the new year.

No super tiny windows along the top?

I will do but first I am going to put the base colour on. I'm not sure if I want 1, 2 or 3 white LED's inside the main Hull yet and where I will place them. I only have 1.8mm white LED's so unsure how bright they will be.

I humbly suggest keeping the light level as low as you can. I think too bright at this scale is overwhelming.

Aye, I am going to have a play with resistors over this weekend to see if I can get a happy medium

Coating the LEDs with white paint will also dim the brightness to help achieve in-scale lighting.

Nothing yet, Mo's shipyard had to close over the holidays. This weekend I will dig it all out again.

Thanks Trekriffic, I will keep this in mind for the next build. I already glued the caps back on before I closed down
