Ships pack on Shapeways

Post by shiftdel » Mon Oct 03, 2016 12:36 am

Today a Shapeways member requested a pack of 8 or 10 of my Jenghiz models in 1/7000, in order to save costs. Well, I attended his request, and for my surprise, I found that it makes FUD and FXD materialsway more affordable. I thought that it would save a little bit, but in fact, in some cases they are cheaper than WSF for the same pack!!!

Example, one Jenghiz v2 in 1/7000 costs $8.05 in FUD, an 8 ship pack in the same material costs $19.80, or $2.47 per ship! A 10 ships pack costs $23.26, or $2.32 per ship!!!

Sadly it would not work for 1/2500 ships, because of the size, it would probably surpass the maximum bounding box limit of the material (although for smaller ships, it may work).

AWESOME!
this is great news.
if you build by the sprue,
they let you do it for a while...
until someone at their head office
plays goodytwoshoes about infudgement or other,
and insists on a onceoff etc.

FXDii and FMD or FUD materials
they're a little more brittle,
but dang if that detail isn't awesome!
clear looks like 'cloaked' fresh from the sprue,
and if you put clearcoate or sealer on it,
it won't discolor.

Have you had discoloration issues with FXDii?

will any other shiftdel creations be
available 'by the sprue'?

You get like 5 or so extra ships at the same price,
which'd let you get another sprue,
or a parts sprue for KITBASHING :D

speaking of which,
will you be making bitz-sprues for things like
nacelles or hull sections, the 'struts' etc?
I know you couldn't do a whole 1:2500 ship,
but maybe a few bits here and there'd help hehe.

beaks to warbirds as an addon pack would be awesome,
to 'shake things up' -
you know the 'harpy' beak?
no-one wants to tackle those interrupted curves and conic segments...
or, the talshiar warbird beak - its not quite a regular warbird beak.

I have just one model printed in FXD, as the bounding box restriction of it prevent most of my models to be released on that material. The one I have (a sabertooth in 1/72 scale, as tiny as a fingernail) I did not paint yet.

Yes, if demanded; just need to know the scale, and the number of ships per pack. Small ships would be more difficult (a BOP in 1/7000 scale is 1.55 cm) to rescale, and would need some parts thickened in order to be printed, although FXD can print really small (my sabertooth has it mouth wide open, so imagine the tooth). Just a side note, my pack has not a sprue, Shapeways do not like sprues, and even if they like, I prefer to make none, to oblige them to recall each and every ship on the pack after print; on a sprue, if one ships drops off, they may forget it.

dJiPi have some good ideas about this too, I was exchanging some pvt with him about making a pool of parts for kitbashing, I need to restart that conversation, but I am open to this idea, just have to take into account my slowness to model anything.

I already have the 2 Jenghiz versions in 1/7000, 8 and 10 ships packs, and the 2 Magellan versions, also in 8 and 10 packs.

I'm the one who requested these packs! I'm quite happy with how the initial order turned out, and will post some photos this evening.

I made some testing with larger models, and found that there is no gain in packing big models together, actually, they are more expensive than to buy them separately.

For smaller models it is still an advantage, currently I have most of my TMP lineage models available in 1/7000 scale, in packs with 2 to 10 ships, depending on the model.
