The versions with nacelles, deflectors and shield crystals all rock as hospital ships- but at that point, just give them impulse engines too!
It would make perfect sense to have a hospital container ship brought into system, set in orbit over some world in need and left in site for several months.
The shuttle bays and transporters would be all that's needed to get doctors where they need to be- and the travel capabilities would let the hospital move between several colonies in the same system.

Hmmm. You think there'd be a defense pod too- something all Phasers (three Banks per side?) lined up with a torp launcher on each end....

Actually... I believe some of those designs have all that you mentioned in one unit.
At that point, they're more like self sustaining, and self propelled, ships. :lol:

More like proto-ships. Something more akin to a parasite craft that can spend extended periods away from it's "momma".
