Klingon D4 and D5 from Starcraft

Post by Markus » Sat May 04, 2019 6:30 pm

I'm giving this tangent from the BoP thread its own topic. First up, here are some better views of my Starcraft 1/1400 Klingon D5, built pretty much directly out of the box. The biggest change I made was using .010 guitar strings in place of the thicker brass wire that come with the kit.

The base paint is Tamiya XF-71 Cockpit Green and the raised panels are Tamiya XF-21 Sky. This is inverted from the CG model which has a lighter green for the base coat and darker green for the raised panels.

My favorite Star Trek novel of all time is "The Final Reflection" by John M. Ford, which takes place pre-TOS and is told from the Klingon point of view. Although it was written decades before ST:Enterprise (and these particular ship designs), the D4 and D5 feature prominently, at least by name. I had to build mine as the two hero ships in the book, the old and weary D4 IKV Fencer and the brand new D5 IKV Mirror.

And here's IKV Fencer, a stock Starcraft Models 1/1400 scale D4. Base paint is Tamiya XF-14 JA Grey, dark panels are Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey. I dry brushed the raised panels with Tamiya XF-62 Olive and XF-49 Khaki and got a pretty good mottled look.

The impulse engine and aft torpedo area has fresh paint due to a recent repair for severe fingerprint damage. Perhaps Fencer also had an encounter with Apollo's giant green hand?

I love these! Man, if I wasn't already set for my next project (99% sure it's going to be the Valdore) I'd be pulling these out for my fleet to work on. These photos are inspiring.

Agreed.

Very well done indeed! Both models bear testimony to your talents as a modeller sir. Love them.
