DONE: 1/1400 Defiant class & family

Post by Halgebra_A6N » Wed May 01, 2019 11:42 pm

It was time to switch to a canon model, so I chose a 1:1400 Defiant class that I bought years ago from Nova Hobbies.

This was a perfect opportunity to break out my new set of modeling files!

Without them, I’d have a much harder time with filling and shaping - especially the fills around each engine.

The Defiant is pretty much ready for a coat of primer. Here are two Gallant class escorts, also from NH. I’ve started filling and sanding them, but they’ll take more work and I may just move ahead with their “mama” for now.

In any case, I have a similar escort that I got from Shapeways. It is one of these designs that may or may not be a “Sao Paulo” class escort; there are a couple of different ones floating around out in the STO universe. I like to think of it as a refit of the Gallant class. It’s already got primer but could use some more sanding.

I had a cannon model once. It was a 12 pounder Napoleon on a field gun carriage.

Nice. I have a trio of these little Gallant class ships that I decided to rename into the Erinyes class for my own head-canon - names will be the USS Alecto, Megara, and Tisiphone. Felt fitting somehow.

I only have one of my old Defiant class ships, but there's a dude on Shapeways who is selling a 1/1400 scale version in the same size....and it's even lightable. :o About $100 total for the whole kit, but it'll be worth it to have one Defiant class that's all lit up in this scale.

After much filling & sanding, the Gallant class hulls are pretty much restored. Those thin parts were challenging to replace! I adapted the “coiling” method of making ceramics to layer thin drips of bondo to approximate the shape I wanted. Made sanding more straightforward.

I decided to go ahead and prime the lot of them. That’s where I’m at as of this weekend.
