USS Steamrunner- Starcrafts 1/1400 kit. WIP. Pic heavy

Post by andyh » Thu May 14, 2015 5:58 am

In keeping with my 1/1400 builds of the ships from First Contact (see my recent USS Budapest post) comes the USS Steamrunner. Just finished decaling the top and gloss coated.

With this one, I tried to use the CGI reference as close as I could (I know some people think the purple on some of the First Contact CGI models was a glitch but I think it works ok.

Awesome work, AndyH!
Check out that detail - I'm hoping there's other views coming soon,
this is awesome!
The decal are expertly apply, I dont see any lift, bubble or warping.

Purple seems to work, it might have been a key-color for the key-lighting?
maybe to create a specular color,or correct for effects?
Looking to the photoref (from the actual filming model), unlike with the Norway (which looked to be grey-tan all over, with no maroon - though alternate paint scheme work nicely and fit with StarTrekOnline paintwork), the Steamrunner seems to have had a lot of purple/blues in highlight.

Each to their own, maybe you make the Steamrunner your own,
and make it with purples also -
Ent B had a 'government green' color and pinstripe - many fan dislike that color, but it looks okay, especially next to a blue Excelsior (though, Excelsior is probably the white/blue color scheme).

If only,
you could shrink your model down to 1:4848 scale -
it is very difficult to find these in the proper scale scaled to the Furuta/Eaglemoss entE

great work again AndyH! :D
:dancingbanana: :rockbanana: :explosionbanana:
(apology to elGato, for stealing somewhat elgato thing, but Steamrunners are some of my favorite ship for some reason).

I concur!

Even though the notion of an engineering you can only access by going through the Warp Engines...

A mighty fine job...

I did always have a soft spot for this design. Ir ember building this exact kit years ago and being sad when it was done :P

Great job so far, looks spot on!

More pics coming soon.

I've just had a decal disaster on the bottom (speaking of decals). I accidently touched it when turning the model over and it was very wet with Decalfix.....my finger stuck to the half melted decal fast!

I've e-mail Dennis to see if I can get a replacement.

@andyH
I see what you mean... i am so sorry to jinx.

silly decals, they never get the memo- they're supposed to just slide on, without the free 'battledamage',
I know the decal is only trying to help...
Recently, I am getting back into 1/48th models for 'weirdwars' and DUST, and the GDF(german defense force) decals are not only photo-sensitive (they yellow, and the black of the symbols fades even if stored away from air and sunlight), but they turn to mush after 12seconds in the bath - the instructions are specific for 1 3ml dot of detergent in 450ml of warm water for 45seconds-1min15seconds (how precise), but the decal actually needs only 20ish seconds, and a sealer coat when its adhered to the paintwork.

though, its still an awesome project, and really excellent all in all -
with some scorching effects and worn metals,
it would look great as some minor battle damage :D (unless you're looking for 'starfleet parade fresh")
It looks like an asteroid/comet shape too, like a 'starship birthmark' - there must be the odd thing that gets through the deflectors, much like ST:Voy never modeled sustained battle damage (except for during Year of Hell).

@moongrim,
agreed!
it looks like a few hundred meter of jefferies tubes only... I hope they wore kneepads under the coveralls today heh.

Just like the Oberth having a lower cargo/science hull that can't be accessed,
or the Chariot having the main elevator junction inside engineering...
but, then as a non-Trek Nutrek fan observed "Transporters, spluh"
transporters are sorta like "The Force" - you don't want to overuse that stuff...
and what happens if you're like McCoy?

Nice job. Too bad about the lower decal. Nothing that can't be repaired though thank god.

Update.

I've come as far as I can on this until I get the replacement decal from Starcraft.

I've finished the weathering and hull panel details which didn't come as decals. I'm just waiting for the decals so I can dull coat the model and do all the windows.

The CGI has purple engine and deflector dish glow (instead of Blue), but I think that it makes it too different to the standard Federation ship so I opted to go Blue.
