AST 1/1000 Defiant Kit preview (part 3) - Final Thoughts

Post by MEATLOAFr » Mon Jun 04, 2018 3:40 am

Round 2 1/1000 Defiant – Final Thoughts

From what I can say about this kit is:
1. It is a good size – they could have easily gone with the smaller size.
2. The panel lines are a little thick – but nowhere near as bad as some other kits (with the panels decals they should have gone smooth IMO)
3. This kit BEGS to be lit-up, but some spots will make it hard to do that, (namely the buzzard collectors and windows) and some could have easily been done on the clear tree.
4. Decals are a little thick – and some spots that have raised details that make them harder to get to lay down properly.
5. More than one name/number set would have been nice – there are at least 3 cannon names that could have easily been included.
6. A few decals are not sized properly – some are not long enough and correct placements make them off.
7. Kit box states 30 parts – mine only had 28 (missing the 2-part swivel for the stand) hopefully not all are.

Nit picking aside – it is a great kit, and I plan on getting a few more (and lighting at least one)

Nicely thought out post.

Thanks for the review Meatloafr! Would you mind telling us what decals you think are to big? I've seen this problem with Round 2 decals in the past ( USS Excelsior ) but I really don't feel like trying to figure which ones your talking about.

To anyone who wants this kit you can now order it though Auto World, I placed my order on Saturday and it shipped out today.

Biggest offenders to correct size is the pinstripes for the nacelle cowls, and the "sand" color nose decals not shaped correctly

Thanks Meatloafr. I got mine in the mail yesterday and it's a nice kit but I see the problems with the decals you're talking about.

I ordered another one for myself - I plan on making vinyl templates for painting & lighting, so keep an eye open for that build thread

i have forwarded decal concerns to r2. they always interested in feedback and will be testing what they have. expect changes with any 'faults' found in the first run. :vulcan:

Not trying to be a downer Xen but when it comes to decals I don't remember Round 2 ever fixing anything at least not on the 1/1000 refit or Excelsior. Is there something I'm forgetting that they've fixed in the past?
