AST 1/1000 Defiant Kit preview (part 2) - Out Of Box Build!

Kit parts still on the trees

Minimal flash on the kit I received, only part that is of concern is the neck pipe part, it has the unfortunate pleasure of getting most of it

Clear Parts:

Engraved panels lines look nice to me, defiantly not as bad as several of the older kits – after painting they might fill in even more making them fainter

Now here’s a close-up of a few pictures of the parts removed from the trees
Buzzard collector part and neck pipes:

Underside of Nose part:

Upper warp cowling and stand plug:

Although the kist is a “snap kit” I chose to glue mine, just so the parts stay secure and if it’s ever dropped (I have 2 kids, and ‘think’ they’ll mess with it someday) it will stay together

Nose parts glued:

Make sure to put the clear deflector grill into the nose before snapping/gluing it together, that part is not listed on the instruction sheet

Glued the clear pods into place – one side of mine was a little to loose for my liking
Image
(That drop of glue under the bridge comes back to bite me later)

I apparently forgot to take pictures of the main hull after I glued it together

But as I stated, the drop of glue that I did under the bridge, came back to bite me – as I stuck my finger in it and had a little smear of it hit the top of one of the nacelle cowlings (just a little bit that I’ll have to sand smooth before I paint –but do have pictures of the main kit assembled:
Image
small evidence of the finger glue on right cowling, luckily it’s extremely small
the little bit of glue that oozed out will be sanded smooth as well

main hull complete, just a few small parts left

Forward cowling inserts installed:

AND NOW, some comparison shots with other 1/1000 Round2 Kits:
with the Reliant upper hull

with the re-pop Excelsior kit from last year

with the Refit saucer

with the NX kit

STAY TUNED - the glue is drying, and I have to go get come paint for this model

that is definetly not scaled right it is completly out scale with the excelsior saucer the defiant should be a quarter that size going by the screen shots i have seen with the defiant and the lakota which is a excelsior class refit for it to be 1/1000th scale but other than that nice work on building it

The Defiant changed size a LOT on screen, could be anywhere from 60m to 190m long. Does look towards the upper end of that.

They went with the 170m size which is the official length for the ship but yes the size of the ship on screen was all over the place. This is the second review I've seen so far and I have to say this kit looks like a lot of fun, my only complaint is with the decals some of those grey panels should be blue.

One thing I'm not happy with is the size of those grid lines, but that's par-for-the-course with these R2 1K kits. And yeah, I agree the ship is a bit big in scale when compared to those other kits, but I'm overall glad they went with a larger kit.

I should clarify, I'm not happy with the depth of those grid lines.

The ideal depth being 0.000 inches.

Not wanting to derail the thread, but for reference, Starcraft's Ent-A saucer and Spaceboy's Defiant at 1:1400...

...so looks about right.

Well, garage kits aren't always well know for their accuracy in scale or detail.

Okay, put another way, the Defiant cannot be this small. There's a lengthy article about it on EAS.
