IKS Gr'oth

Post by Griffworks » Tue Aug 08, 2017 6:53 pm

This is my version of Captain Koloth's ship. It's based off the ship first seen in ST: DS9's "Trials and Tribble-actions", then retconned in the Remastered TOS episide "The Trouble with Tribbles", when they added the ship in via a CG model. Greg Jein built the studio models seen in the DS9 episode, wanting to give them additional, subtle detail compared to their original counterparts.

I'm using the Atek Dummy 1:1000 scale Klingon D-7 1/2 set, which is at least pretty darned close to what we saw on-screen. At the very least, it works for me!

It's been kind of frustrating, tho. I've worked with vinyl masks before, yet these are more... intricate than those I've worked with before. However, I love a challenge, so am bearing down and pushing right on thru.

Aft detail that I added. I wanted the impulse engines to be a bit different than the K'T'Inga to show some advancing of technologies.

Starting to pull the masks apart - which is called "Weeding", per Lou at Aztek Dummy, where you pull the parts out that you have no intention of laying down on the model - and place them. This isn't at all easy.

Starting to lay down the masks.

First set of masks laid down, to include the insides of each pylon and underside of the boom. It took me about 3 hours to do all this, mostly because of the boom decals.

I added some spare masks to the top area of the hangar area. I just wanted some additional detail there, as well.

The business end.

Still laying them down....

Top is complete!

Going a little faster on the lower hull.

And done!

Now, to prime, then paint....

So the masks are yellow? Shows up well against the grey plastic.

Yes, masks are yellow. I'm starting to add them to the Goz'r's upper hull - taking a quick break - while assembling the Stormbird hull that Lou sent me back, to which he had applied those specific masks.

Really excited about all these non-Federation ships!

Ok, shot Gr'oth with some Tamiya rattlecan AS-14 OD Green (USAF). I must have hosed up on shaking the can enough or something, as it almost looks glossy in some spots. Hoping that a little dullcote will fix that down the road....

That's looking good...

Funny, how the masks look like they'll give a little depth to the paint job when removed. Or left on for that matter.

That green really looks sharp. I Wonder how it'll look under dramatic lighting.

In low light I'll bet it looks grey.
