Baker CLASS -U.S.S. Ripley LV-426 (SRS Prototyping) - PIC HEAVY

Post by Gidiot » Sat May 27, 2017 6:25 am

Hey all,

I'm sure some of you have seen what Scott over at SRS Prototypes is putting together for me...or I should say the first of the two Ships he's building for me.... well I've decided to star it's own thread.

SO first, backstory... I've always loved the Movie era ships (Like some TOS variations -Admiral Buck's Hood, Repulse and Sentinel- as well). Tried to collect all of the FASA ships, printed them right out of the "Ship Recognition Manual" and hung them on Christmas trees... well. My favorite ones were the Refit (I mean come one you knew that one right?), the Baker, Chandley, Thulfir, Remora (but with two Nacelles) and Northampton Classes. This thread is about the Baker Class, I will later make one for the Chandley (Super) refit, or what I am re-cristening the "NIMITZ" Class Variation as that one is being built and hopefully at some point the other three as well will be built up as well... so here.... we.... GO!

While I liked the original FASA Baker, it always seemed big to me compared to the other ships... I mean it was a destroyer, not a Heavy Cruiser or Battleship right? Well it seems Brad R. Torgersen over at the Star Trek Starship Tactical Combat Simulator ( http://www.ststcsolda.space ) agreed with that sentiment as well... he set out to design an updated and more size appropriate version:
Screen Shot 2017-05-26 at 10.52.57 PM.png
Well as you see it's got a much smaller saucer, more compact body and stubby nacelles... Yeah, I dig it... well I for years dreamt of becoming a master model builder.... but I'm more of a glue it together, paint it and give it some decals kinda skill level... (I need someone who's willing to put up with showing me step by step hands on to really figure stuff out - oh well...) and one day I saw SRS Prototypes and some of the work Scot's done.... well I reached out, he agreed to build her and with that The SRS Shipyards began building the Ripley (Yes From the Alien franchise).

Here you see the original refit 1/1000 scale saucer, I had previously primed it for doing the Enterprise, but that changed!

you can see where Scot sanded it down getting ready to remove the outer sections to make a smaller saucer. he sunk anchors through so when trimming the top and bottom it would be a clean edge.... (Nice trick... I'll have to figure out exactly how to do that too!)

here you can see it after it was trimmed down to size...

while he filled it in with Styrene he also added a forward Torpedo baby

Next I I sent him some pieces from other kits for a Larger sensor dome and what I believe is the "Abbe" class bridge modules... I thought a larger planetary sensor would help the smaller ship as it does not have a real deflector, dish or otherwise, so this along with the shield grid and Warp Nacelles would act as a tangent to deflect space dust and debris (don't want my little baby getting hurt in the big mean vacuum of space!

well, to give this girl a big ole back side some drastic measures had to be taken to the rear of the upper saucer... sorry girl!

Here you can see that a reliant was also sacrificed to create the Baker class.... the belly of the beast you might say, along with the scratch build nacelles.

details to help with the Gap created while making the secondary hull and saucer connect... Some sort of new power coils? who knows, but it really added something to this area!

From above with the Primary and secondary hulls together, you'l also notice I took the Abbe's Impulse deck in place of the standard Refit version... I like the split engines as it to me would seem to give it greater maneuverability in sublight speeds with potentially less reliance on the RCS system.

so Now Scott has started getting fancy... It's time to paint! :D
I decided to go light on the Paneling, some to show this is how she looked right out of Drydock and some I didn't want to make her overly busy and take away from the graceful job Scott did with the build.

Now we also start seeing the Decals. These were made by Del for me, or at least most were... after talking with Del I've started doing my own... you'll notice the gangway hatch and Grid lines on the side of the saucer... Yeah, that's right, I did that... and I thing later even more of the "extras" will show up... but that'll be for another day.

OK, HERE SHE IS.... U.S.S. Ripley LV-426 Yeah ok, Not a "BIG" Enterprise (tv show) fan, but the NV an NX classes give me a good enough reason to have the "LV" used instead of the traditional "NCC" and it was a Great way to show an "older" vessel and to honor the movie Alien twice with the same ship

Did you use larger scale nacelles cut shorter? the 1/350 version I'm working on uses 1/350 (Shortened) nacelles with 1/537 primary hulls

The Nacelles are 1/1000 Constellation Class nacelles, from the Alliance kit.

Nicely done build of the Neil rectification. Neil did a beautiful job of taking the truly awful FASA drawings and making them work. Even for designs I hate. Imaginative they might have been the FASA guys were not draftsmen. But that is an old rant.

Gorgeous model.

@gidiot,
nice work! nice buildup by scott too,
this is one outstanding baker variant buildup!
I played that Generations music from the Ent B reveal while watching these (and the alternate).

forgive a brief joke,
as awesome as it looks, I would personally not want to serve on that ship,
or any others associated with Tyrrel corp or WeylandYutani
its bad luck waiting to happen hehe.
lets just hope no-one named or affiliated with Zimmerman or Soong is on the manifesto...

digressing for a moment,
the LV though, what "treknobabble" could L V stand for?
NX stands for experimental/prototype...
is LV like SS or other designations we've seen for non-active starfleet craft etc?

Littoral Combat Vessel (LCV) is a real-world designation for shoalwater/reef and low-draw vehicles...
a fine example being the trimarans USS Independence or Coronado.
so Littoral Vessel? Long-range Vessel? Light Vessel?
Landing Vehicle? (not normally hehe) Lost Vessel?
LV is 55 in roman numerals
aha! ---> Logistics Vessel

thanks for sharing,
and I'm looking forward to some more closeups of this eyecandy :D
can I be a pest and request a closer look at the join between the nacelle strut and the main hull?
there's a lot of detail there I'd like to get a closer squiz at.

NX should be for New experimental, but as Star Trek enterprise has shown is not necessarily the case because that is the NX class where the Intrepid is the NV class... so I took the fact that they've already messed up the registry histories and decided that that meant I could cheat and use LV – 426 which happens to fit with the theme of warrant officer Ellen Ripley and the planet she and the Nostromo set down on. As for what it means for my ship I was just using it as a designation showing that it was a different type of assignment for this craft as more of the NCC meaning galactic explorer and LV meaning more of a assigned defense vehicle.

I always took the LV designation as "Life Viable" in the aliens universe - as a planet that can support human life

Well in all fairness, Ripley's kinda the anti Weyland/Yutani queen after the original movie... The USS DECKER and USS BLADE RUNNER also seem to go against the establishment. But as the BLADE RUNNER is scheduled to be an Excelsior class. NCC-2049 (see how I worked in the up coming movie :D ) we may have to see if either is really just a tool for the Tyrell corp.
