Drop_Bear's Build: Reimagined Enterprise (WITHDRAWN)

Post by Drop_Bear »

It's not yet April 1st, but I thought I'd start my thread now and share what I have planned. I was going to build an upgraded Coventry out of a 1:600 Revell Enterprise kit, but seeing as it's the fiftieth anniversary of TOS I have decided to do an Enterprise instead. A reimagined Enterprise, mind you. It'll be much more interesting and slightly more original than an OOB build. :D

So, I have the Polar Lights USS Enterprise Space Seed Edition and Enterprise Refit kits. 1:1000 scale, obviously. I'm going to take parts from the Space Seed Edition kit (specifically the nacelles, bridge, pylons, impulse engines, and navigational deflector) and combine them with parts from the Refit (primary and secondary hulls) to produce an Enterprise with the proportions of the Refit and the smooth, clean lines of Matt Jefferies' original. I will fill in the deflector grid and drill holes for torpedo tubes in the secondary hull, but beyond that... I'm not sure. I want my Enterprise to be as close to the original as possible. The idea is to make a ship that could have been rebuilt into the Refit we see in TMP more easily and more plausibly than the "real" Enterprise. It will look something like this:

I think I might do a reimagined Botany Bay, too. Something based on near-future technology. I could replace the cargo module with a spinning habitat ring, and it could have large cylindrical fuel tanks, a couple of space capsule escape pods, and a disc shaped radiation shield. It might end up being as long as the Enterpise.

I am definitely going to try my hand at reinventing the Botany Bay. A Botany Bay will make a nice companion for my Enterprise and I have found some parts to get me started - a pen and two 1:2500 scale Enterprise nacelles. I'll start a separate thread for this build later.

The pen is roughly the same diameter as Botany Bay's fuselage, but has a more realistic shape. Well, realistic for a spaceship built anytime between next Sunday and twenty years ago. The nacelles are just perfect for fuel tanks.

Ooooh, I love this idea. The nacelles really do look like SRBs. Are those going to just be rocket boosters or are they the primary engines for the new DY-100? I need to get my project lifted off after I finish the Excalibur.

Thanks, guys!

At this stage the nacelles are going to be fuel tanks, DefiantClient. The ship's engines will be in a separate module at the aft end. I probably should have said something, but I arranged that photo to show the size of the parts I'll be using rather than the intended layout.

Dropbear,
Wish I had a little diecast shuttle model here instead of at my mother's house up in Tennessee. I'd cast you some copies of the tank and boosters. They'd be absolutely perfect for this type of project for some more fancy parts.
i don't know. I'm making it up as I go.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure traditional rocket parts would work. My Botany Bay will have ion or magnetoplasmadynamic (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magneto ... ,wikipedia) thrusters which seem to require cylindrical rather than bell shaped exhausts.

Well, the picture in the ST Encyclopedia (made canon by Voyager) showed the DY-100 was surface launced with a ton of SRBs similar to the space shuttle (Kerbal Space Program style ;) ). A reimagining of the SRBs are fine by me though since I think there's little difference between the look of shuttle's and the nacelles you want to use.

Rather than simply diving headlong into my Enterprise build, I have decided to make some drawings to use as plans. And to give you guys a clear idea what the hell it is I'm building.

I came up with this silhouette today, just to make sure my idea really will work before I invest too much time in orthographic drawings. I think it works. A few things to nut out, though. The front end of the secondary hull, for instance. Now, on to the orthographic drawings, and then... happy super fun playtime!

Well I haven't decided what I'm building yet but if you are building a "Space Seed" themed diorama I suppose it won't be the Enterprise/Botany Bay kit. Nice idea for a reimagined Enterrpise.
