Introduction.

Introduced in Star Trek The Motion Picture and featured in TNG, DS9, Voy and ENT. Modelers have always wanted good adversary model to display with the enterprise. In 1979 AMT obliged and gave use a 1/537th Klingon Battlecruiser. Most modelers have looked at that kit and been a little disappointed. Like the MPC Millennium Falcon, it looks like the ship, but when you look closer it’s not really right, soft details odd proportions. Like the Millennium Falcon, and the refit Enterprise for decades your choices were either build it and paint it as is and have a good model that’s not quite right or spend more than the cost of a kit on add on parts.

That changed in the 2000’s in 2005 the 1/350th Refit was released. Good, solid, no drooping nacelles. A wonderful kit that was perhaps the best Trek or Wars kit ever released at that time. Then Fine Molds released a 1/72nd Falcon. From there model companies have finally started making good accurate kits for Sci Fi builders. We’ve been treated to the 1/350 TOS, Lots of great Bandai SW kits.

It’s really hard to look at the 1/350 K’Tinga on its own. I can’t help but expect that this will be as big of a leap from the AMT 537 refit to the 2005 350th Refit. I honestly expect it to be better in ways. We’re a decade further in manufacturing. I expect it to be as well engineered as the TOS 350. Hard to say how it will compare to my last build the PG Falcon.
I’m not expecting this kit to match the intricacy of the PG Falcon, but I’m hoping it has a good modern fit. Some of my biggest questions as I start the kit are,

Will I need any putty? A lot of modern kits fit so well that very little putty is needed. If Round 2 has given us a kit with a plug and play lighting kit, and a fit so good that we don’t need putty, and no need to light block then I’ll really be impressed.

I just received the kit, and the box art looks great. The inside box, folds out to provide the paint guide.

I'll have lots of pictures of the sprues and parts tomorrow, but I wanted to show this tonight. Round2 has included a resin bridge and a stryene bridge. The Resin has more detail, the styrene will glue a bit easier.

This kit is also molded in black. I can't tell you how excited I am to work on a kit with lighting that I won't have to light block.

The red tinted parts come in the lighting kit. The clear are included in the kit.

A lot of the panels are raised just slightly above the surface.

Instructions for the lighing kit say to open and widen up these windows and then cover them with the photoetch. IT's still really impressive that they were able to punch out these window holes.

The window holes on the bulb are not all punched out all the way. they are thin, I'd say it's almost just flash left inside the some of the holes. These definitely need to be opened.

The fit is fantastic. you can tell it's not a snap kit of any kind, infact I was surprised to see that some parts don't have any locator pins. this sidewall, and the surface it mounts too are both beveled 45 degree to help with light blocking, but there aren't any pins or connections to hold it. Luckily all the surfaces fit flushl and just a drop of cement on the seam and it's glued.
