Chiokis Engineer's Tender (Experiment with new materials)

Post by Kremin » Tue Jul 19, 2016 8:36 am

Chioskis Starship construction wanted a simple way to get their engineers to where they were needed without having to call on others, as they had access to a large amount of surplus ships from a storage depot they decided to adapt several to give them a small group of ships made from scrap as such no two were alike in either size or style and none were allowed to be armed

this is the story of Chiokis 3

I have a few scrap hulls and parts and I wanted to try out some cheap paint stripper and a new filler without destroying a more valuable kit, as well as try out some methods of building to use in competition entries

I'll put up some of the key photos of developments but the link to the album is here http://s583.photobucket.com/user/Jack-c ... shop/story

I started with an old 1/537 refit hull that I built 20+ years ago twice and was painted with several layers of enamel paint

I used some oven cleaner from Poundland to remove the paint letting it soak for a couple of weeks it mostly worked, enough to be useable

Image

I also cut a hole in the top of the hull to fit a 1/350 Bridge and B/C deck in and cut off the botton of the hull to remove the underside curve

to give reinforcement to the remaining hull I used a wood filler I found at a local B&Q and had tried out on another kit

This stuff sets hard but sands very smooth and as I wasn't lighting the kit it didn't matter if I filled most of it

I used my silhouette to cut some sheet styreen as a level to work to

Image

and filled to the new line to hold the hull

Image

the bit of the hull cut off earlier was re-attached to give some shape back

Coating the bottom of the hull got a coat of filler

Image

and the first sanding began

Image

It wasn't perfect on the first go

Image

some holes and some extra needed

after a bit of fill and a sand with finer grit starting to look right

Image

a little bit of green putty dealt with the last bits

the ftop hull had the same treatment

Then both sides sprayed with a filler primer

bit of light sanding add the Bridge B/C decks fill around and another coat

(1/350 primary hull shown for scaling)

the underside may get an equipment upgrade

which will be attached to this (after some more cutting and filling)

This looks promising. A lot of Engineering for an Engineer's ship!
