Uses for sprue

During my Warhammer stint, sprue was an all too common waste material, but you could usually find a use for it. Now I'm thinking, getting back into larger models and Star Trek, you could make a drydock out of it.

I'm not sure how you'd scale it, but it seems a natural use for all those straight chunks of plastic lying around.

Been done? No point? Other ideas?

Greebles/pipeing on a borg cube. I have seen the use as a dry dock but that was a long time ago.

I don't know if you are aware, but you can "stretch" the sprue to make thin round strips. I use that along with my tnnex liquid glue to fill odd seams. You can also create different sizes for different trim pieces like radio masts, ladders, etc.

Internal piping for any battle damage that rips the hull apart.

Probably not what you meant, but I made a rack for setting parts on in my airbrush booth.

Melt sprue in a bottle of Tenax to the consistency of paste and you'll be able to use it as a plastic putty. And if the sprue you melted came from the kit you're building, PERFECT match in under-lying color and hardness when sanding. I used to do it on all my 1/48 WWII planes.

I've never heard of Tenax. Where do you get it from? When you melt it, how long doe it take to harden? Will it stay soft/putty-like if sealed in the bottle?

I think it's Tenax 7r or something like that. Haven't seen it in a while but we've just got one Hobbytown here in Mobile. Very strong stuff. I left it in there for several days. I'd usually let it dry and harden overnight. I know I had it for at least a year before I went a little crazy and got out of the hobby for a while. Experiment with it. It's been a good ten years since I tried it. I read about it in Fine Scale Modeler.
