Star Trek is a product like any other. Consumers of products are well within their rights to voice their dissatisfaction with them and to spend their money elsewhere. Doing so hardly makes them "mentally unbalanced."

"Change" can be a good thing or a bad thing. One cannot assume that simply because something is changing that the change is necessarily positive. You'd no doubt agree if I pointed out the White House changed hands in 2016.

1. "Casual fans" are mainly attracted to movies because of production values or the presence of some actor whose work they like. I am a casual fan of Judge Dredd, for example. I saw the 2012 movie because I like Karl Urban. I did quite enjoy the film and its universe, and it was a slick, well-produced and well-acted action romp. I'd see the sequel if they ever get around to making it. But the IP holder cannot count on me to buy merchandise or support the franchise in any way beyond a movie ticket, because I'm merely a casual fan.

2. "Staying with the times." The sounds a lot like the old liberal line of being on "the right side of history." There is no right side of history. People who cling to this have merely substituted one kind of religiosity for another. A liberal saying he's on "the right side of history" is no different than an evangelical saying "God has a plan for me." And attempting to capitalize on current cultural fads is a great way to date a franchise, not keep it current. I know everyone involved believes whatever silliness they're advocating is surely the "next frontier in the civil rights struggle," but I'll wager money people in the future will look back on trivial nonsense like oh, say, "manspreading" or "mansplaining" and cringe, as they will at any franchise that tried to market itself by aligning with said activists.
