Before I could finish assembly I had to paint the inside top and bottom.

Now that I've done that I can glue the top, bottom and bow together and start fixing those final gaps.

I've worked quite a bit on the model in the past few days, and I"ll be posting several WIP pictures tonight. But right now I wanted just to post a quick picture of the filming model and a picture of what my model looks like right now.

What color paints did you use to get the look you have on this kit?

The overall dusty green color is a mix I made. It's mostly white, with haze gray and flat green. If I had to, I'd say it's 3:1:1 White:gray:green.

To get the look I have here I painted the entire surface with this dusty green color.

Then I airbrushed white streaks across the ship. I used tape to make an edge on the long lines across the ship. I airbrushed across this tape to make a hard edge on one side and a soft edge on the other. Then for the shorter lines I used a some card stock to make some very simple stencils that matched the curves of the panel lines. I airbrushed across these to add more white streaks.

I ended up with a surface that looked like this.....

For the darker areas I used Flat Green.

That gave me this, a dusty green finish with bright white streaks and darker green panels.

The final step was to airbrush my original dusty green color over the surface again to mute the white and dark green until it looked like this...

For the nacelles I wanted thinner streaks, so I cut a strip into my cardstock. I didn't want hard edges so I held it about half an inch away from the model and airbrushed through it.

I ended up mostly free had airbrushing across the bow of the ship but I also tried using the card stock again to get some nice streaks.

Here are a few shots before I misted airbrushed the base coat over the ship again.

And what is getting close to the final product....

I also should say that this paint job is one of the most fun paint jobs I've done in a long time.

Very nice Steam235, thank you for showing how you got that look. I want to try this on my kit. I really like the way your kit looks. Thanks again.

Final thoughts on the 1:3200 scale Romulan Warbird.

This kit, more so than some of the others really feels like an older kit. I'd say as far as fit it has some of the biggest gaps between pieces. The gaps between the head and body, and the tail piece are obvious, but also you need a lot of putty around the nacelles. The nacelles aren't supposed to look separate, the entire body is supposed to wrap around them.

But for all the gaps, the proportions are good. The detail is good, and the putty work is very easy. There are not any small details near the gaps that you might sand off by accident.

So yes, if you're only used to building snap kits, this will be a hard kit to look good. Break out the putty and sand paper and plan to have several days of just smoothing things out.

It's not a kit to just put together it's kit where you dry fit, file things to fit better and then assemble.

But it's fun.

This kit was really very fun. It was nice to get things smoothed out. The paint job was very fun to do. Star Trek kits are often very regimented with very precise masking and panels. It's definitely something different to airbrush those streaks on the model.

The decals were great. The hundreds of lit windows are an iconic part of the ship, and it would have been beyond tedious to do those without decals.

Huge props to anyone who lights those windows I've seen some builds where it's been done and it looks great, I'm thinking that it would be harder than most star destroyers.

Should you buy this kit?

I think it comes down to whether or not you like the subject. If you want a good adversary ship on your shelf It's a good one to pick up. It's also a good one to get to practice a lot of actual modeling skills, seam work, paint and finish.

And here are some of the final pictures of my build.

Is that where the nacelle decal goes? I’ll have to look at the previous release instructions - I thought it went on the inside of the nacelles, but I could be wrong
