1/537 Saratoga. Pic heavy.

Post by andyh »

I’m building this jointly with the Bozeman model.

Once again, this has a lot of the master parts that went into the ‘Alliance’ conversion kit. I mastered most of the parts before gifting them to Alliance and Federation models.

Here’s a run down of the mods.

Started many years ago so it’s the old inaccurate release of the Reliant kit, so I had to thicken the hull.

New rear panel mastered by me and sent to Federation models. The filler for raising the rest of the saucer edges is just styrene plastic but there is resin formed spacers sold through Fed. Models now. Not required on the new release of the kit.

New B/C deck and bridge. Mastered by me and sent to both Fed models and Dons Light and Magic for mass production.

New saucer top sensor thingies (not sure what you’d call them). Mastered then sent to Fed models for mass production.

Outboard sensor pod mounts. This 3 part mounting was mastered then gifted to the Alliance Saratoga and Bozeman conversion kits. Now, the actual outboard sensor pods were mastered by someone else from the Alliance team (I’ll let him put his hand up if he chooses).

Replace the grills on the front of the warp nacelles with some resin Refit replacement parts which I got from with DLM or Fed models (can’t remember which).

That’s it for the parts that were made which are available to buy.

Other mods I did.

I cut out the lower saucer concave and put in a grafted Refit Enterprise one from an old smoothie I had laying around. I did this on a whim as I was never really happy with the concave on the Reliant kit. Not convinced it was worth the effort though :) I did a lot of work on the details at the rear of the lower saucer concave as you can see.

Also, I placed some sheet styrene in between the two halves of each pylon to replicate the vents on the leading and trailing edges.

This is nearly ready for paint now (only taken me the better part of 10 years). I still need to do something about the lower planetary sensor array as I’m not happy to just use a resin replacement for the Refit because the Reliant one is just too different.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I re-scribed the grid lines on the top of the saucer so they where in the correct position and added resin replacements for all the phaser banks (both top and bottom).

Top coat going on.

Looking very nice. Those "sensors" mounted to the saucer rim are great!
You are doing a lot of work but I'm sure it will be worth it when you are done.

I decided to tone down the Aztec on the saucer.

Loud Aztec is too distracting from the model itself. Subtle is the way to go.

The painting is going really slowly.

You'll notice that the Aztec and panel detailing has been toned down quite a bit.

I never showed a picture of what I’ve done about the lower planetary dome unit.

This is a 3D printed one I got.
