Romulan Bird-Of-Prey ChR Gal Gath'thong from TOS

Post by trekriffic » Wed Dec 12, 2012 11:36 pm

This is my build of the Romulan Bird-Of-Prey as seen in the original series episode "Balance of Terror".
The kit was recently reissued by AMT and is purported to be in 1/650 scale. As molded, the kit is horribly inaccurate when compared to the filming model so I spent a lot of time and energy modifying the kit to the point some have commented it would have been easier to build it from scratch but, heck, I never do things the easy way so... I hope you enjoy the pics...

The studio model as seen in the episode:

I went with the name Gal Gath'thong which is the name given it here at the Memory Beta WIKI site:
http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/ChR_Gal_Gath%27thong

"The ChR Gal Gath'thong (also known as the Tellus or Nhorazz) was a Vas Hatham-class Romulan starship in service in the late 23rd century. In the 2260s, the Gal Gath'thong was commanded by Commander Keras and served as the Praetor's flagship."

I added a lit hangar bay complete with two "Talon" fighters-one with folded winglets in the bay and one with winglets extended in flight:

Outstanding work! I love the detail at the end of the engine nacelles... it gives a real sense of scale to the model, as well as a sense of function.

cool ... ive got 2 of the 1/350 vac versions of this bird ... thinking of maybe scratching some added details the the shuttle bays and landing gear extended and landed in a dio of some sort .. was also tinkering with the idea of maybe attempting to recast the parts in resin. wont have to be perfect since im thinking of doing a semi destroyed on with interior deck details and maybe some internal engine detail and have the exterior pretty well scorched and damaged hence the no need for a perfect recast or maybe ill just scratch the parts i need and not bother with making molds and such to use only once

ive got a set of deckplans for this bird that im gonna use as a basis for the internal detail tho in 1/350 its gonna be fun making lol

maybe the dio will be the crashed landing of a wounded bird and the other landed and doing a rescue of the surviving crew ..ive got some 1/350 resin figs i can use for crewmen lol

Nice, unique approach to my favorite subject!

I really need to get building one of these.
