Del's 650 TOS-E

Post by Del » Thu Oct 11, 2012 5:02 pm

I built this over 7 years ago, and since then it's been packed, moved, and unpacked a couple of times. It was an old, broken model that a friend gave to me. It originally had multiple layers of ugly colors such as dark blue and black, with white being on underneath. So, I stripped it down with "Easy-Off" (yuck), and became my first attempt at accurizing anything. Now that you can see my stand, I'm sure that vises will become all the rage across the boards. :D

Image
As you can see, I didn't try to go crazy with detailing. This was a chance to develop some skills, and I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Image
Even though I strengthened the pylons with brass rods and epoxy, if you look close, you can see a crack where it joins the hull. I also had a minor problem with some decal rippeling on the saucer, but "in-person" it's not that noticeable.

I had a lot of fun converting this poorly constructed OOB model into something that looks pretty decent. I also learned a great deal about myself and model-building during the process!

Nice refurbish job you did on this classic kit. Do you recall what color you used for the hull?

I use Tamiya acrylic paints exculsively, so nope, I have no idea. I just mixed until it looked right. I believe it had varying shades of gray and maybe a drop of blue.

How about the color on your bussards? Is it a straight color or is it also a mix? Nice work by the way.

It's been so long since I painted this I'm not really sure. However, the bussards are of a copper color for the powered down look, but not sure if I mixed or not.

I like it! I have one of those hanging from the ceiling in my hobby room. I built it around 1988, and while the stand is gone, and the decals have started to flake off, she's still intact. I never painted her, just some detailing here and there, so she's in the original gray plastic with the decals applied directly with no coating.
