I was partially thinking of casting in two materials, the sorta crumbly wsf or another material whatever it's called for the smooth parts as the grain effect would potentially look metallic if painted in colours and ultra frosted detail for the actual detail like wires aerials etc etc

indeed, by the unimatrix! look at that
:borg2:
to see this come together, now I'm torn.
do I get the 1:1400 (which sits nice next to the "1:4848 cube")
or, 1:2500, as it will be easier to flatpack and transport etc.

I'm already stocking up on APEC-5/OHT and decal paper...

I think you could make a very nice cube in 1:2500th if you wanted.
Pretty easy too, if you're just looking for a nice visual-
Get a nice color CG cube image and have it printed to scale- printed in color, each side (about 40" square, I think) would probably run you about $30, so that's most if your expense (call it $200 after tax).
Spray mount the color prints onto six black foamboards.
Add layers of sheet styrene and sprues to give it a 3-D look- you could even add green fiber optic lights by drilling from the back and inserting the bulbs.

You'd need to to make a base, but that would be easy-going I'd get a cheap floor lamp and put it on that as a free standing display in your living room!

The cube could transport easily, as it would weigh only a couple of pounds (being mostly foamboards and being hollow).

And there likes the issue with most Borg models. 40" is 1/2500. If you want larger scales you get into small rooms. Even gaming scale models are too big to game with. The Borg cube is not hard, it is just huge. If I put an image of the Borg cube behind my main modeling shelves it would cover most of the wall behind them. 40" is eight shy of four foot.

An accurate scale Borg cube will assimilate your modeling displays.
