TOS-E WIP

Postby mophius » Thu Jun 22, 2017 10:46 pm

I have been scratching at this one for a little while now.
Had a nightmare trying to get the saucer halves together and the halves didn't meet evenly all the way round but they are finally tight and even, gaps need filling around edges yet.
Secondary hull and nacelle pylons were also a nightmate as I couldn't get one to sit right as glue was setting. I ended up snapping off the wayward pylon and re-attaching it how I liked it. I now have to fill and sand the strongback section as there is glue and gaps all over the place. Deflector housing went on no problem though.
I have cleaned up the nacelles but not stick them together as yet.
I thought I would try something new to attach the saucer to the neck. Instead of CA or cement I would try putting Tamiya White on the saucer slot as it would stick to both sections and fill the huge gap that the neck would have up to the saucer. I will let you know how it fares in the morning.

Wow, you got a really bad production copy because I've never had one that bad. Yeah the fit in general is not the best, but still

It is not a great model fit or finish. The one on my shelf sucks badly. I don't even plan to fix it, toss and replace.

I admire any effort to get the thing looking half-way good.

Well the saucer and neck are stuck fast.
Maybe it is me being really fussy with this but when the saucer overhangs at the top one side and the bottom the other then I know I am going to have troubles.
Once I get the nacelles together and fitted and then the strongback flattened and filled that will be half the battle.
What makes this worse is that I now have at least 5 other kits of this whether for bashing or making as different production models.

Next task is nacelles.

It takes some work but it can be made into a decent model...

Not as nice as trekriffic's but yeah, you can make a decent model out of it.

Those are both very nice builds. I am not sure I will be up to that standard yet but will sure try my best.
Nacelles are now both together and have fitted the first onto the pylon. To get the right alignment on the nacelle I had to shave the fitting hole, this left me with two problems. Loose fitment and a large gap. I applied Tamiya white to the hole and pushed the nacelle in, then chocked model and nacelle in position and left overnight to set.
They are now ready for the next one.

Nacelles are well aligned. Pylons are slightly slanted to the rear and port more than starboard but this is barely noticeable. I really just wanted to get the nacelles in line with the saucer so that everything flows nicely.
Am I being too fussy for such a small model? Maybe I am my own worst critic and thats why my Reliant hasn't come out right yet.

Nice job with the alignment. You gonna sand that putty off?

Yes, I will shave away at the worst with a scalpel then file and sand. I have to do the three connections so wanted it to be well set before getting stuck in. Tomorrow will see more progress.
