Another Another 1400 1701-D Resto

Postby michelalano » Sat Feb 25, 2017 4:23 pm

My dad was a big model/hobby fan and growing up he had many trains, planes, and automobiles lying around. I inherited his collection of testors paints and supplies. Being a kid in the early 90's, which you could say was something of a Star Trek heyday, it was natural that I got into Trek Modeling.

The 1701-D was my third or fourth model, after the Excelsior, Refit, and TOS enterprises, none of which survived to today. I was impressed with the scale and detail of the model and despite my ambitions I couldn't do it justice with the tools I had. Basically I painted all the windows (badly) and applied all the decals in the box. Being what I thought was innovative and crafty, I used yellow paint to depict lighted windows on the white moulded models, which looked "ok" to my 8 year old self, and I was quite proud of my method of using a toothpick to paint every single window yellow or black. However on the blue-moulded 1701-D... well, it started to look rather disastrous. I slapped the decals on but for some reason or another I never finished, leaving the saucer detached and in two halves. Then life happened and the thing went from drawer to box to new house to new apartment over and over, never being displayed.

Fast forward 25 years and I go to the Museum of the Moving Image here in NYC where they have a very small sci fi section with a couple of (I'm sorry) badly painted and assembled models in glass cases. Thus began my insatiable itch to get back into modeling, my first task being to FINISH this damn 1701-D.

For prepping the model I stripped what I could of the old paint and decals but that gloss yellow was there to stay. WIP and hopefully finished pics to follow very soon.

Soak that sucker in engine degreaser (i use the purple stuff) and it will make short work of that paint.

I'm following a few simple rules to keep myself from going crazy. Basically I'm doing everything in the same way I would have done it 25 years ago had I had the patience and the means. This means I'm hand brushing everything (including all windows and aztecing). However I did spring for some aftermarket decals for registry markings and lifeboats.

By the way, hand brushing the aztecing, especially on this model which has all the panel lines moulded in, has been surprisingly therapeutic. It's like a paint by number or a 3D coloring book. I've gotten pretty good at staying inside the lines

Here is my color list:
Base Coat: Testors MM Light Ghost Gray
Light aztec color: Testors MM Lichtgrau RLM 63
Phaser banks: Testors MM Neutral Gray
Shuttle bay doors: Testors MM Medium Gray
Nacelle bussards: Gloss red with a few drops of metallic copper
Nacelle grilles: Gloss blue with copper dry brush over raised lines
Deflector dish: sky blue / metallic copper
Windows: Sakura pen-touch .5mm white paint pen (highly recommend) and Staedtler .5mm black pigment liner pen

Here are the WIP photos thus far:

Lifeboat and registry decals from PNT Decals. I sort of wish the lifeboats weren't so contrasty but it's much better than I could have done with paint.

Much better than my hand painted Ent-D. Mine looked so bad I think it ended up trashed (some of the parts ended up on my Freedom class kitbash).

I've got 4 more Ent-D's in the stash but I've been too put off by my first attempt to tackle them yet.

Did you use any masks or templates for this azteking?

Incredible. My fat fingers are no where near capable of painting such tiny details so cleanly

Did you ever finish this? It's looking fantastic!

I restored my Ent D not long ago from, what sounds like, a very similar back story.

I admire you though for hand painting that Azteking, I don't have the patience so cheated and sprung for the wallpaper decals.

Looking forward forward to seeing it finished :)

I like the subtler aztecing. Too many jobs look like toys the paint is so loud.
