I think I'm getting closer to my final design. More minimalist this time.

Moving ever closer. Today was the day I took a deep breath, grabbed the stand, and put it on the easel. I'm quite pleased with the outcome.....even proud of it. Now it's time to let it dry, and get started on the other little suprises I have in store for this.

Honestly I think I appreciate how a model is presented as much as the model itself. Obviously most of my models are 'kits on sticks' with little beyond that, but when I can, I like going the extra mile with these. I've already got a half-formed mad idea for the 1/1000 Ares model when I move back to that.

I was going to post a picture of tonight's work, but.....you'll have to wait for the final reveal I think. As Sheldon Cooper would say: Bua. Ha. Ha. In the meantime, I spent a lovely afternoon online shopping for LEDs. I love Lighthouse LEDs...they're good quality and inexpensive. Got a fistful of 2Hz flashers for a couple 1000 scale models, some SMDs for the big E, and some interesting flickering LEDs for the Klingon BOP (whenever I manage to get to THAT wonderful ship!)

Wow.....fist time soldering SMD LEDs and I thought I was choosing larger ones when I ordered the 0603 chips. Little did I know these were still beyond minuscule. Anyway. 4 of the UV Purple SMDs are all wired up, and shockingly, they all work and I didn't lose any! Not bad for the first time. I need to go give my eyes a rest now.

PS...that's my pinky in the background.

That's some remarkably good soldering for a first timer.

It's making my eyes hurt from the strain- that small!

I think it's high time to update this bad boy. We're on the home stretch...in fact, we thought we were DONE tonight until we realized we haven't painted the windows ports in yet!

We're also tired of talking about ourselves in the third person, so we're going to stop. We're not the queen, you know.

A while ago I was mean and decided I wasn't going to post the final stand idea until it was all DONE. Well, it is....so here you go:

The final painting on the stand turned out fairly nice (I think!)
Image

Once that was done, I drilled out small holes in the corners and added some small plastic corner covers:

And added LEDs under the mounting pegs for the ship itself:

The mounting pegs are reinforced underneath with resin dams, so there's plenty of material for them to drill in to. Here you can see the wiring and the LEDs from underneath. Looks nice and clean, yes?
Image

Not for long. I am apparently getting better at precision soldering, but NO good whatsoever at controlling the robin's nest of wires.

Back up to the top. Stand is, for want of a better word, finished.

Let there be.....

......light.

More to come. Last cell phone pic before it died:

That's about it. I'll take a few more pictures once the window ports are painted in, but I'm pretty much wrapped up now. It's been a fantastic build of a very neat subject. Hope you enjoy the photos. Comments, questions, criticisms are all welcome!

Thank you kindly! The stand was almost as much fun to build as the model. :D It's a large chunk of resin, but SO worth it if you're a Vulcan fan.
