USS Sentinel, NCC-2550 - 1/1000 scale Light Cruiser

Postby Griffworks » Sun Dec 31, 2017 2:48 am

Just released late Thursday night / early Friday morning!

This is the 1/1000 Sentinel-class Light Cruiser from UGH! Models. It’s a resin kit (see link below) of an original design by Bill Krause. And it’s been highly anticipated, if only by me!

Get it here at UGH! Models Store.

Box art.

The kit includes 14 parts, plus a Development Patch base, and is beautifully cast in blue tinted resin. It has PETG clear vacuum-formed domes for the Bussard collector, and decals that give you a choice of names for four different ships: Sentinel, Swift, Vanguard, and Electra. The model dimensions are: L: 9.25” / 23.5cm x W: 4.5” / 11.5cm x H: 1.5” / 3.9cm

The base coat is Tamiya rattlecan AS-5 Light Blue (Luftwaffe), with a variety of other colors and paint types used for detail painting. While painting, I tried to stay true to what references for Bill Krause’s awesome original build. I just used the old Mark I Eyeball to “color match” to the images that Google sent me.

I drilled out the aft photorp tube.

Paints I used: standard Testors Light Blue enamel for the nacelle intercoolers, aft nacelle caps, rec deck windows, and several of the windows on the hull of the ship. I used Model Masters Silver Chrome on the aft end caps, sensor dish and spike, and the spikes at the front of the nacelles. Model Master enamel Int’l Orange was used on the small domes at the front of each nacelles, as well as for the Impulse Engine vents. Model Master acrylic Haze Grey and Intermediate Blue was used for various accent colors. Standard Testors Copper was used for some of the metallic accents, as well.

Beauty shot!

The base is the Development “patch” that Bill has for the project pics. The lunar base is a resin casting of the old Monogram Battlestar Galactica kit. I intend to paint up the base as Luna, the patch will be painted to represent a brass plaque.

Get it here at UGH! Models Store.

I’ll include more pics and info on my build later.

More of that Stuff & Thangs...!

The Domes! I sanded the dome on the left with 600grit sandpaper to frost it. The one on the right has not yet been molested....

I used a pipet to place a drop of Tamiya bottle X-26 Clear Orange inside the domes. I swished the paint around, fully covering the interior. I then set the domes upside down, allowing the paint to drain out. All credit to Bill Krause, as I was going to do something sorta similar, just to the outside of the domes. His way works much better, IMNSHO!

End results. I’ll use canopy glue to adhere them in-place - once I find where I put it!

More to come!

Aft caps on the nacelles. I tried to make them look sorta like what Bill did to his much larger version, which uses the 1/350 TOS-E from Polar Lights / Round 2 as it’s base. He lit it and this area is lighted blue on his model.

As promised!

Ever so closer to being ready for decals!

Only a few areas left to paint. The bridge dome, the “ring” around the upper decks, and the flush vents on top of the pylons. I may end up painting the landing deck area outside of each if the upper shuttlebays, too, tho not yet decides for sure.

And, of course, the base needs to be painted!

I love this angle of beauty shot.

Another favorite angle. The only thing I would change to this design is to add a dual phaser emplacement forward of the photorp tubes.

I like this angle shot, as well. It really makes me want to do some painting on the landing deck area. Maybe do a yellow stripe down the center of each “lane”, Haze Grey to either side.

I retouched the Bussard dome interiors with another coat of Clear Orange. I felt the original single coat was too light, so darkened it just a bit.

Hoping to finish up the detail painting tomorrow, then get to decaling!

Nice build up Griff. You work fast if you only had it for a couple of days.

Thanks, fellas. It’s one of those Grail Kits to me, do I jumped on it quickly when I got it. My goal was to have it finished today, tho that won’t happen. By tomorrow, tho! It’ll be the first kit I complete in 2018, and that’s good enough!

Just want to throw something out there - don’t forget that while Bill did a fantastic job of the original design work, Kenneth at UGH! Models did the CAD work to draw the model from photos for printing, then Erin did the molding, casting, and created/printed the decals.

I’m not at all taking away from Bill - far from it! - so much as making sure that I give proper credit to Kenny and Erin for their bringing these kits to reality so we can enjoy Bill’s work!
