Here There Be Tholians

Postby Griffworks » Sat May 06, 2017 10:07 pm

Don't know if any of you have heard, but UGH! Models recently released a 1k Tholian Battlecruiser in their line. It's meant to represent a TMP Era design of ship.

Goes along nicely with their TOS Tholian Ships, tho.

The kits are now available for purchase, too.

woohoo!
more tholians for tabletop gaming!

Is it true UGH also had ideas for a clear lightup variant?

wait, some of the UGH designs,
is it sacrilege if I borg-ify them?
you know what that means, i'll have to double up the orders,
to get one tholian one, and one that I can borg-ify.

I don't know anything about a clear cast set. Perhaps someone mistook when Erin posted a pic of the fresh off the printer parts, which look to me like it was printed in FUD - Frosted Ultra Detail - which is a clear sort of resin-like material.

aha, so that was for proto-type purposes only then, the clear FXDii variant?
maybe that'd be available upon request as an option
in any event, cheers griffworks :D

Nice design for that Tholian Battlecruiser- does the nose piece aligne with the main body 'ribs' or is it aligned with the valley?

Yes the do, and all parts are slotted with a nice fit.

The clear parts you saw were the freshly printed pieces fresh off of the printer. We use the Formlabs clear version 2 resin in our Form 2. At this time we have no plans on casting anything in clear resin, but we do pour it occasionally when we have it in house. Clear is a PITA, so we rarely mess with it. So if you see clear parts, chances are you're seeing the printed masters. If we cast in clear, we'll note that the product is available in clear specifically.

The nose section of the Tholian BC is designed to align "ribs" with "ribs". While the parts are keyed, care must be taken to align the parts correctly. This holds true for both scale versions of the kit.

@dashpule,
Erin, thanks for moseying by and sharing the behind the scenes there
( lame pun inbound, thanks for 'clearing' that up, and who said borg can't make puns :D )
:borg:

I thought I was seeing things when I saw that through the grapevine,
as that would be lightyears ahead of many other tholian options out there :D
Tholians, particularly TOS-R variants, they're all "sparkly glow-y",
so they're one of the few factions that'd look excellent in clear.

Forgive me getting ahead of myself and contemplating a borg-ified Tholian battlecruiser
(the sacrilege, though you know what that'd mean - collectors'd have to get a couple - one or two "for the fleet",
and one to borg-ify) :D

thanks again,
Kobayashimaru
