El Gato's entry: TOS Constellation Class - DONE!

Postby el gato » Sun May 29, 2016 6:43 am

I don't know why I like the Constellation Class but I do. Late last year I decided I wanted TOS version of it, so I drew a "body" for it and would use parts from a TOS E to finish it. Unfortunately I selected to print it in acrylic... and I've been sitting on it trying to figure out what to do with it. The problem with this materials is that it is both brittel and has some serious striation that needs to be dealt with. Then this contest came around. So I got off of it and will do what I can to make it look good. Top pic is my proof of starting within the contest time frame. The remaining are the parts I'll use and how the body will work with the saucer.

Probably a silly question, but couldn't you cast the acryllic piece in resin?

I really like that Constellation hull. Especially the twin TOS impulse decks.

It's only a silly question because if you knew how hard my casting skills suuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkkk you wouldn't ask that question

Now, it so happened that I applied a coat of Citadel Liquid Green Stuff (which is essentially a thinner, water soluble version of Bondo) yesterday and sanded it this morning. I managed to get the body to be mostly smooth. Pics to follow.

Thanks! As you know the real Constellation Class has double impulse decks on the aft connector piece between the main hull and the pylons (via Memory Alpha):

Problem is that it didn't "look" right to me in the render. Then in a moment of inspiration I came up that in a TOS version the impulse engines would have to be in the body. That freed up the connector piece to be thinner, essentially making it one giant pylon

Sweet!

Unfortunately not a significant update. I sanded off the sprue nobbins* off of the parts, and as noted earlier managed to sand the body smooth (the lines you see are internal).

Astute modelers will notice that I sanded the internal sides of the nacelles smooth. I did this because the nacelles will be realigned in this ship. As a result the long thingies* and the side squares* would be in the wrong place once I mount the nacelles tje way I want to do it. So on the list of things to do is to recreate the detail.

I'm also working on the decals. This will be the USS Constellation, NX-1974 (per an Okudagram in STVI).

I'm loving where this is going. Can't wait to see it assembled.

Oh, sorry. Sometimes it gets away from me

I drew it an had it printed. Once I finish this build I may offer it on my Shapeways store. I think I need to show pictures to show the possibilities

I was never a fan of the class, but I'm liking the TOS version of it a lot, and your printed hull is pretty awesome.
I'd like to get one if you decide to make it available and I can find time and money to do it.
i don't know. I'm making it up as I go.
