Which decals and why?

Postby asmcelhinney » Sat Apr 05, 2014 12:24 pm

I thought about posting this in the 1/2500 section as that's where my main interest lies, but it makes sense to be more all encompassing.

There are a fair few 3rd party manufacturers of decals, and across the many options there are often multiple sets available for certain kits, so my questions are;

Which decals do you use?
What's the difference between the options available?
Any good/bad experience with them worth mentioning?

Also, adding photos of what you've used would be great.

I've used aftermarket decals from three different people. I used three different people because they seem to be doing different things.

JT Graphics. -Custom registries.

If you have an old kit, the decals have probably yellowed in which case you can buy PNT decals which usually replace all the registry decals and have a few more detail decals. Here's the 1701E set. You can see it has a lot of emitters and hull panels not included in the set. Plus registry numbers for other ships.

Acreation decals makes aztec patterns for a lot of the small ships. But acreation decals do not usually have any registry decals so you will still need the kit decals or decals from PNT

Here's a shamless pic of my excelsior which I used aztec decals.

I had one bad experience with PNT decals which were probably my own fault, I was using spray cans then and I sprayed some Krylon clear gloss acrylic on them to seal them and the decals shriveled and cracked. The Acreations I used on that excelsior were wonderfull, pretty much went on flat and almost melted onto the ship(ina good way) with some microsol.

I used a couple Absolute Models decals on my constitution Refit.

I'm also going to be using some on my Enterprise B, but no pictures yet.

In addition to the other info, in some cases the decals provided in the kit aren't completely accurate. An example I've seen is the font and pinstripe for the movie Refit.

Some really helpful stuff there guys. For those who you who have both fully painted (except for name/registry etc) and full 'wallpapered' kits, do you have much of a preference?

I've used Accretions for my NX build and I am about to use JT Graphic's decals for my contest build right now and I am happy with both. It just depends on the look you wish to go for, I don't mind a wallpapered model, I just enjoy looking at the final product.
