I think people are having a difficult time separating material from premise. The premise is tired, even if there are not a lot of scifi-based comedies out there. As someone said, why poke fun at a TV show that's been off the air for 20+ years? Then again, how many comedies rely on the premise of the shenanigans that surround a single family, where the center of the universe is a living room couch? Talk about a tired premise.

No, by sheer numbers, to be a success "The Orville" has to have solid material. It will have to be either poignant, funny or both. If McFarlane et al find that sweet spot, then great. If not, it won't last past the first season.
